Last Week of School

Dear Parents,

Thank you also for the very generous gifts this week. I feel especially appreciated :) Here is my blog update of important information about the upcoming days.

Next week all three days are half days. We release at noon. All three days will be full of instruction and some testing so please be sure to send your student in each day. Missing these last three days could lower your scholars grades significantly.

Next Wednesday I will be bringing in pizza, juice, and cookies for a small end of the year celebration. We will also be playing a jeopardy game. If you do not want your students to eat this small lunch then please send them in with another option.

If you are interested in having your child tutored over the summer, please contact one of the following teachers who will be available for tutoring!

Important Concert Information

May 2, 2016

Dear Families,

Due to the size of the venue for our Spring Concert, we are going to have to be a bit creative in the structure of the program for the 1st – 3rd grade concert.  All scholars are to arrive by 5:10PM at King of Kings Church located at 3095 N. 140th Drive, Goodyear, for rehearsal.  Parents will drop their scholar off at this time to the care of their teachers.

The doors will open for First Grade parents to take seats at 5:50PM.  The front rows of the church will be reserved for First Grade families.  The First Grade portion of the concert will begin at 6:00 and will go until 6:20PM.  Upon the conclusion of the First Grade performance, First Grade scholars will be walked out to the courtyard to the west of the sanctuary.  Once dismissed, First Grade families will join their First Graders in the courtyard for refreshments.

At this time, the Second Grade families will move forward into the vacated front section of the sanctuary, with the Second Grade portion of the concert beginning at 6:20 and going until 6:40PM.  Once this portion of the concert is complete, Second Grade scholars will be walked out to the courtyard to the west of the sanctuary.  Once they have left the building, Second Grade families will then be dismissed to join their Second Grader in the courtyard for refreshments.

At this point, Third Grade families will be allowed to move forward into the front rows for the Third Grade portion of the concert from 6:40-7:00PM.

At first glance, this system seems rather complicated, but when there, we will all work as a community to make our time of celebration with our young musicians a very special time of friendship and Great Hearted teamwork.

We will have faculty on site to help with all of the logistical needs of the evening, and we thank you in advance for your patience.

Sincerely,
Heather Washburn
Headmaster

Quarter 1 Week 4 Update

Hello Parents,

A few announcements.

  • This Thursday is Curriculum Night. Please join us from 7pm-8pm to learn more details about our curriculum.
  • Picture day is this Friday! Please send back the picture form that was sent home this Monday if you would like your student's pictures.
  • A heads up that this weekend is an R&R weekend so there will be no homework. Remind your student to work hard this week so that they can really enjoy the upcoming weekend knowing that they "earned" it!
  • If you haven't already please send in Little House on the Prairie! This is our next book in Literature and we hope to start by the end of the week.

Language Arts

Composition: This week we will be finishing up our study of nouns in Grammar and then finishing up the week with composition lessons focused on summarizing and vocabulary.

Spalding: We will continue to move quickly through the words introducing new rules and markings as they appear. Please encourage your student to write in the Spalding manner we have been practicing in class. This is necessary before we move on to learning to write in cursive. I have been getting a lot of questions about how to study the phonograms at home. Hopefully, this will help. An adult or responsible older sibling should hold the cards up one at a time and your student should say the sounds that are found on the back of the card. The words written back there are to help the quizzer know whether they used the correct sound.

Singapore: We will review this week and quiz on Thursday. Review problems will be sent home.

Science: We will begin our study of Astronomy with a short history of astronomers. Next we will move from our galaxy, solar system, planet and learn how rotation and revolutions effect our life on Earth.
After this week ask your student to explain the difference between rotation and revolutions.

Poetry: We finished our study of Windy Nights by Robert Louis Stevenson this Monday. Our scholars worked really hard on this poem and I was impressed by the rhythm and expression heard today. Please watch for the graded rubric in the yellow take home folder this weekend!

Warmly,
Miss Elfelt

Support Archway Trivium East through the Gift of Art

Here is a request from our Headmaster. Please consider donating.

Dear Friends,

We are so looking forward to seeing you on September 3, at our Curriculum Night Event. On that evening, you will have the opportunity to speak with your child's teacher, as well as see a lesson that might be taught in your child's class on any given day.  As we continue to enhance the rich learning environment of Archway Trivium East, I want to share with you a unique opportunity.  In partnership with Studio West, we have prepared custom registries of artwork that will allow families to purchase artwork to adorn our halls. I would like to invite all Archway Trivium East families to join us in our commitment to creating an academic environment that celebrates beauty by purchasing a piece of artwork for our campus.  Each piece will be installed with a small plaque that describes the artwork and acknowledges the donor.

As a devoted member of the Archway Trivium East community, I have personally chosen to donate The School of Athens by Raphael to enrich our lobby. Each day, scholars will walk in and meet Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Euclid and so many more "great men of old."  Please consider joining me in awakening the moral imagination of each child who enters our doors through the gift of art.  For more information concerning this opportunity, please contact Annann Hong, Director of Academy Giving, at 623-866-9480 or Ahong@archwaytriviumeast.org or Shannon Keys, Archway Trivium East PSO Chair, at ArchwayEastPSO@gmail.com.

With Devotion,

Heather Washburn

Grammar/Composition: We will work on nouns this week. Give your scholar a noun and ask them if it is a person, place, thing, or idea.

Literature:  We will continue to read Arabian Nights. Ask your scholar some questions at home.

What happened in the chapters this week?
What part was your favorite?  What part was your least favorite?  Why?

What do you think is going to happen next?
Which virtues have you seen the characters showing?

Math:  We will continue to work on place value.

Thank you for your support!

Here is Archway Trivium East's consumable book list. Please make sure your scholar has the supplies they need. This week, we will begin our studies in earnest and it is important your child can follow along with our class.

I cannot believe we have already finished the first week of school! This was a very exciting week and I'm truly looking forward to our adventures this year.

I wanted to remind everyone that the assessments we took this week were pre-tests to give teachers baseline data. These assessments will not be factored into the students’ grades.
Here is a look at what we will be doing in the classroom next week:

Language Arts:

Spalding - We will jump in with a review of manuscript handwriting. We will also practice both written and oral phonogram reviews this week.

Grammar - We will start our Language Arts journals, practicing summaries and vocabulary studies.

Literature - We have begun and will continue reading Aladdin: Tales from the Arabian Nights. Please send Little House on the Prairie in with your student this week. We will be reading that next.

Math:

We started last week with some math games and will go directly into place value instruction on Monday. Students will deepen their understanding of numbers by manipulating, comparing, ordering, and rounding numbers up to 10,000.

History:

We have started and will be continue our spatial reasoning and maps unit by learning about rivers and continents.

Thank you again for allowing your students to spend the days ahead in my classroom, it means the world to me. Please know that I am just an email away if there is anything that I can do for you!

Welcome to 3B

Dear Third Grade Parents,

I am so thrilled to be working with your student this year! Thank you for trusting your scholar's education to this great school and to us. I can’t wait to meet your students and get started. We have very high expectations for your scholar and know that they will rise to the occasion. Above all we will be learning about the virtues and growing as great-hearted individuals!

I graduated from University of Dallas with a degree in Elementary Education and have experience teaching in second through fourth grade. Last year I spent as an apprentice teacher in fourth grade at Archway Glendale. As well as knowing where we need to go in third grade I am familiar with where your student is coming from and will be going in the future.

Mrs. Jennifer Houlihan has a degree in music from Belmont University in Nashville Tennessee and has spent the last 12 years homeschooling her children.
